How to Use Breathwork for Emotional Release

There's something incredibly powerful about the simple act of breathing. We do it thousands of times a day without thinking, yet when we bring conscious awareness to our breath, it becomes a gateway to releasing emotions we didn't even realize we were carrying.
I remember the first time I truly experienced breathwork for emotional release. I'd been holding onto grief for months, walking around with this heavy feeling in my chest that I couldn't quite name. During a guided session, something shifted. As I focused on my breathing, tears came unexpectedly, and with them, a sense of lightness I hadn't felt in ages. That's when I understood that our breath holds the key to unlocking what we've been storing in our bodies.
Why Breathwork Works for Emotional Release
Our bodies are remarkably intelligent. When we experience difficult emotions, we often unconsciously hold our breath or breathe shallowly. It's a protective mechanism, but it also means we're literally holding tension and unexpressed feelings in our physical bodies. Breathwork reverses this pattern by activating our parasympathetic nervous system, the part of us that helps us feel safe enough to let go.
When we breathe deeply and intentionally, we're sending a message to our nervous system that it's okay to release what no longer serves us. Emotions that have been tucked away in the corners of our hearts finally have permission to surface and move through us.
Simple Breathwork Techniques to Try
The Emotional Freedom Breath
Find a comfortable seated position and place one hand on your heart, the other on your belly. Breathe in deeply through your nose for a count of four, feeling your belly expand. Hold gently for a count of four. Then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six, releasing any heaviness with each breath out. Repeat this for five to ten minutes, allowing whatever emotions arise to simply be there without judgment.
The Shaking Breath
This one's especially good when you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and take a deep breath in. As you exhale forcefully through your mouth, let your body shake and release tension. It might feel silly at first, but there's something deeply freeing about physically shaking off what you've been carrying. Do this for two to three minutes, then notice how you feel.
The Box Breath for Grounding
When emotions feel too big, this technique helps you find your center again. Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold empty for four. Imagine tracing a box with your breath. This balanced breathing pattern helps regulate your nervous system and creates space between you and intense feelings.
Creating Your Sacred Breathwork Practice
The beauty of breathwork is that you don't need anything special to begin. No expensive equipment, no perfect setting. Just you and your willingness to show up for yourself. That said, creating a little ritual around your practice can make it feel more intentional.
Light a candle, play gentle music, or simply find a quiet corner where you won't be disturbed. Some women find it helpful to journal after breathwork sessions, capturing any insights or emotions that surfaced. Others prefer to sit in silence and simply integrate the experience.
What matters most is consistency. Even five minutes a day of conscious breathing can create profound shifts over time. You're training your nervous system to feel safe with your emotions, to know that feelings can move through you without overwhelming you.
